Can I Get Business Finance with Bad Credit?
Yes. Adverse credit narrows your options and usually raises the cost, but it rarely closes the door completely. Specialist lenders exist precisely because high-street banks decline anything outside a very narrow box.
What counts as bad credit to a lender
Lenders look at both the business and its directors. Missed payments, defaults and CCJs on the company or a director's personal file all register. What matters most is recency, size and whether the issue is settled. A satisfied CCJ from three years ago is a very different conversation from an unsatisfied default from last month.
Products that are most forgiving
- Asset finance: the asset is the lender's security, so a director's historic credit issues carry less weight. Deposits may be higher.
- Invoice finance: lenders are assessing your customers' ability to pay, not your credit history.
- Merchant cash advance: decisions are based on card turnover, and many providers accept directors with adverse credit.
- Secured business loans and bridging: property security makes credit history secondary to the value and the exit.
Unsecured loans are the hardest to place with adverse credit, though there are lenders who will consider settled issues older than 12 months.
What lenders want to see alongside the credit file
An explanation. A one-off event, such as a divorce, a bad debt or an illness, with evidence of recovery, is understood. A pattern of recent missed payments is not. Three to six months of clean business bank statements, a clear purpose for the funds and a realistic repayment plan will all help.
What to avoid
Applying to multiple lenders yourself in a short period leaves a trail of hard searches that makes things worse. It is one of the most common mistakes we see.
